Could Laois have second Independent candidate in upcoming General Election?

Dail

Portarlington business-owner, Elaine Mullally last week announced her intention to run as an Independent candidate in the upcoming General Election.

Speculation continues to bubble, however, that there may be a second Independent candidate considering putting their name forward.

Speaking with LaoisToday, three Independent Laois County Councillors have all emphatically ruled themselves out of contention.

Newly-elected councillor, Tommy Mulligan had been mooted in some corners as a potential candidate after his incredible success during this year’s Local Elections.

But Cllr Mulligan says his sole focus is currently on Laois County Council as he continues to “find his feet” in the new role.

Cllr Aidan Mullins caused shock-waves last week when the Portarlington politician announced his decision to step down from Sinn Féin.

However, the newly Independent councillor says Election to the Dáil is something he has “never considered.”

Veteran County Councillor, Ollie Clooney, who proved his extraordinary popularity during the Local Elections, has also ruled himself out.

Cllr Clooney says he is “very happy to have gotten back on the Council, and that’s as far as I’m going.”

Former Fine Gael councillor turned Independent, Aisling Moran said she “hasn’t really given it much thought,” but did not rule out the possibility of putting her name forward in the General Election.

The remaining two Independents – Cllr Ben Brennan and Cllr James Kelly – declined to comment when asked of their intentions to run.
