University of Limerick (UL) has posthumously bestowed a degree upon a young Laois man who tragically died last year.

Joe Drennan was awarded a posthumous BA degree in Journalism and Digital Communication.

Joe (21), a final year journalism student, was killed in a hit and run incident in Limerick on October 13, 2023.

A native of Mountrath, Joe Drennan was appointed editor in chief of Limerick Voice just a few weeks before his tragic death.

A spokesperson for UL confirmed that the award had been bestowed at a ceremony.

They said: “Joe was a talented and award winning young journalism student who is much missed by staff and his classmates.

“Earlier this year, a new memorial competition for inclusive journalism in association with The Irish Times was launched in his name.

“His posthumous degree was collected by his mother and father, Marguerite and Tim, and his sisters Sarah and Ava.”
