Plea made for people to join Abbeyleix Fire Service as staff hold recruitment drive

A plea has been made for people to join the Abbeyleix Fire Service with staffing levels described as ‘critical’.

Members of the service are out and about Abbeyleix today in a bid to recruit people.

The issue was brought to the fore by Fine Gael Councillor Barry Walsh at Monday’s meeting of Laois County Council.

He explained how the service has been hit with a number of retirements in recent times.

Cllr Walsh said: “I want to raise the issue with the Abbeyleix Fire Service.

“Numbers are critically low. There are genuine fears that they won’t be able to adequately respond to incidents.

“So I would appeal for anyone who may be interested or knows someone who would, to please make contact.”

A spokesperson for Laois County Council echoed Cllr Walsh’s comments.

They said: “Abbeyleix Firefighters will be out and about in Abbeyleix as part of their recruitment drive.

“If you see them please stop and say hello.”
