Laois County Council, in association with Bolt, have launched the Portlaoise E-Bike scheme.

The eco-friendly E-bike programme will include 50 e-bikes at 40 locations across Portlaoise.

E-bikes will be available 24/7, at designated parking spots around Portlaoise.

Bike rides will cost €0.18 and a €0.20 unlocking fee. This unlock fee will be waived for the first two months.

The pedal assisted electric bikes have a range of up to 60km on a single charge and are perfectly designed for short trips around portlaoise and connecting public transport options.

A map of designated service areas and parking will be on the app.

Aisling Dunne, Bolt’s Head of Public Policy for Ireland, highlighted the transformative impact of e-bikes on urban mobility.

She said: “E-bikes are enhancing urban areas by improving connectivity, reducing vehicle traffic, and supporting local businesses.

“Our e-bikes in Portlaoise prioritise functionality, convenience, and safety, promoting affordable and sustainable travel options while encouraging a shift away from private car usage.”

Councillor Willie Aird was present at the launch of this ambitious new biking scheme and expressed optimism about this program’s benefits.

He said: “We anticipate that E-bikes will foster a connected community in Portlaoise and serve as an environmentally friendly alternative to private cars.

“We look forward to witnessing their positive impact for residents, visitors, and local businesses.”

Bolt’ E-bikes feature safety-focused designs, including functional dashboards, precise GPS for locating and parking bikes accurately and robust braking systems.

Speed on the bikes is capped at 25 km/h and users are required to pass an in app safety test between the hours of 10pm and 5am to use the bikes.
