St Conleth’s got their 2024 championship campaign off to a winning start with a two point win over Timahoe on Sunday evening.
The match started off at a quick pace as Timahoe were first to get off the mark with a point through Katie Donoghue and a goal from her Laois counterpart Orla Hennessy.
Eva Galvin quickly replied with a goal for St Conleth’s to put the visitors at ease. Mo Nerney and Naomi Luttrell then traded points to leave Timahoe ahead by the minimum.
In the latter end of the first half, St Conleth’s seemed to gain control with Timahoe’s Roisin Larkin receiving a sin bin 17 minutes.
St Conleth’s picked up momentum and converted scores through Aoibhe Byron and Eva Galvin.
The 25th minute saw the visitors ahead by a point for the first time but a Mo Nerney point, two minutes after, saw the half time score level – 1-5 apiece.
As the second half got underway, Aoibhe Byron and Mo Nerney traded points.
St Conleth’s then struck the front when a well worked team goal involving Shifra Havill and Eva Galvin ended with Naomi Luttrell finishing it off in the bottom corner of the net.
Timahoe had a brace of wides and balls that dropped short in this spell which would cost them dearly.
Nevertheless, a late goal from Mo Nerney set up a tense finish as Timahoe were just one point behind with the game in added time.
St Conleth’s came under pressure and went on the attack from the kick out and converted a score through Aoibhe Byron to further the gap to two.
Timahoe kept plugging away but the goal they needed never came as St Conleth’s prevailed.
They will host Park-Ratheniska in Round 2 while Timahoe will travel to face St Brigid’s.
