Woodenbridge Paddlers announce latest challenge for Autism, travelling from Boston to New York

The Woodenbridge Paddlers have announced their latest Paddle Challenge to support the new Centre For Autism in St Fergal’s College, Rathdowney.

The challenge will be on Sunday, August 11, starting at 12 noon under the M8 Motorway Bridge.

Early thoughts were to retrace a journey of 25 years ago from the Woodenbridge to John’s Bridge in Kilkenny.

However, having paddled most of the River Nore between Ballyragget and Kilkenny City over the last month in preparation for the event, a change of route has been announced.

The organisers have instead decided that the potential hazards on the Kilkenny section make the route unsuitable for novice paddlers taking part in the challenge.

The 14k Challenge will now start at Boston from under the M8 Motorway Bridge on the River Erkina and continue by the Woodenbridge.

From there, they will continue by Bishopswood, Castle Durrow and the Old Bridge in the town before reaching the broken weir and the rivers confluence with the Nore at Course.

Paddlers will then continue by the Tallyhoe Bridge before crossing the Tin Weir.

Having passed Ankers Island to descend the New York rapids at the site of the old Ass Mills the challenge will come to a conclusion.

Paddlers can later share their stories on the riverbank at Bob’s Bar in Durrow

All paddlers of any ability are invited to take part in this worthy venture. Sponsorship cards are available and a GoFundMe page is available on social media.
