The Cathole Falls is among the most popular visitor attractions in Slieve Bloom Mountains, along with Glenbarrow Waterfall and the Ridge of Cappard boardwalk.
The Catholes’ large natural pool makes for a popular spot for wild swimming, as well as picnic tables, car parking, and a small bridge into a lovely walkway through the forest and along the river.
Laois County Council have now confirmed that the road in Ballyhuppahane leading up to the Catholes is to be re-surfaced.
The news came at the first full meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District since the Local Elections last month, with new Cathaoirleach Seamus McDonald at the helm.
Cllr McDonald called for the roadworks and Mr James Dowling Senior Executive Engineer at the Council’s Roads Department confirmed the road at the Catholes will be resurfaced in the coming weeks.
Cllr McDonald went on to call for the Council to “resolve the flooding problem at Peter’s Hill,” which is located in Moneyquid along the Laois/Offaly boarder.
The Fianna Fáil councillor concluded by asking the Council to “make safe” the junction at New Mills in Drinagh, which Cllr McDonald described as “a very busy road.”
Mr Dowling responded to both motions, first saying “Laois County Council Roads Maintenance crews will clean the drains in the coming weeks to resolve the flooding” in Moneyquid.
Mr Dowling also confirmed District staff would meet with Cllr McDonald at New Mills “to discuss the provision of safety measures.”
