Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have been accused of being “completely and utterly out of touch and out of control” following “botched” roadworks between Durrow and Abbeyleix.
Local Councillor Ollie Clooney told the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting this week that he was “disgusted” by the actions of TII due roadworks carried out at Castlewood Cross.
The Independent councillor told how he had raised motions over the past few years in the hopes of seeing safety measures introduced on the road, adding that “other than that, the road was perfect – not so much as a pothole.
“Low and behold, the road was all dug up – took about two or three weeks. And then after about a month, the road markings were done, and everything put back the same. The exact same.
“I am personally disgusted, and the people who use the road are disgusted. I got phone calls and people calling to my house.
“I don’t know what’s going on with the TII, but they never contacted me once, not one; nor did they contact any resident in the area – I’d say they Googled the blooming thing.
“They’re out of touch – and their record shows they’re out of touch – because we have over 100 people dead on our roads already this year.
“They’re completely and utterly out of touch and out of control. And if I had my way, whoever is responsible for this waste of money would get their P45.”
It was a busy meeting for Cllr Clooney, who called on Laois County Council take action on two other matters in Durrow.
Firstly, to implement safety measures at Moyne Cross, and secondly, to implement measures to alleviate flooding at a house on Knockanoran Lane.
Mr James Dowling Senior Executive Enginerr at the Council’s Roads Department said “District staff will meet with Cllr Clooney on site to discuss the provision of safety measures at Moyne Cross;” and confirmed that maintenance crews will attend to the drainage at Knockanoran Lane.
Finally, Cllr Clooney asked for an upgrade the footpath on the Clough Road in Ballacolla, to which Mr Dowling assured that road maintenance crews “will attend to this repair in the coming weeks.”
