Coláiste Íosagáin in Portarlington will receive funding to provide a new classroom for special needs children with special educational needs.
As well as this, the existing special needs classroom will have refurbishment works which will improve the already high quality of education they receive.
This announcement will add to the facilities already available in Laois as 10 schools in the county have been given new amenities to accommodate for children with additional needs which were announced by Brian Stanley last month.
Portarlington will join a list of schools that include St. Fergal’s College Rathdowney and the Community School Mountrath which will benefit from these services.
The news of this project was announced by Laois TD Sean Fleming.
He said: “I look forward to the school finalising the arrangements with the builder so that works can commence and be completed.
“Finally, I want to acknowledge the work on behalf of this very large school doing everything in its power to meet the educational needs of the growing population in Portarlington and surrounding areas and the parents and entire school community for working with the school authorities on this project.”
Speaking on the previous project, Brian Stanley had said that numerous parents had contacted him over the subsequent months regarding new classes being put in place before the upcoming academic year.
He said: “The importance of providing these additional classes cannot be overstated, as it is a well-established fact that intervention at the early stages of development and learning is crucial in terms of the lifelong experiences of children with autism.”
