The death has taken place of Mick Carroll, a Timahoe native who has lived Durrow in Durrow for a long number of years.
Aged in his early 80s, Mick made a huge contribution to his communities over the years, particularly in sporting and business circles.
Mick initially ran a quarry business in Timahoe, supplying sand and gravel all across the region – before buying a pub in Durrow in the mid 1980s, which he and his wife Angela ran for almost 20 years.
Born and raised in Timahoe, he was heavily involved in Timahoe GAA club, playing full-back in senior football finals in 1965 and 1968 and part of the panel that won the county final for the only time in their history in 1969.
He later was heavily involved in managing teams at both club and county level and also served as chairman of Timahoe GAA.
Among the teams he was involved in was the Laois U-21 team that won the Leinster championship in 1987 as well as the Laois ladies football team that memorably won the All Ireland in 2001 – managed by Sean ‘Goggy’ Delaney with Sammy Kelly from Crettyard as the other selector.
Mick passed away peacefully but unexpectedly at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise surrounded by his family.
Predeceased by his daughter Lulu, sons Martin and Micheál, daughter-in-law Denise, sister Mary and brother Tommy.
Deeply regretted by his loving wife Angela, daughters Emer, Angie and Bríd, sons Damien, Fergal and Enda, sisters Brid (Ramsbottom) and Marie Goretti (Bergin), daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours, relatives and a large circle of friends.
