The picturesque paths of the Heath have become a beacon of community spirit and fitness thanks to the enthusiastic members of GR8HRUN.
Setup by JJ Tynan, this social running group has not only encouraged local residents to lace up their running shoes but has also fostered a warm, inclusive environment that celebrates every achievement, big or small.
A testament to the group’s camaraderie and commitment is the inspiring journey of a dedicated cohort of female members who embarked on a Couch to 5km program in December 2023 which led many of them to take part in their first 5km for The Great Heath Run at the end of January.
The running bug truly took hold with a second Couch to 5km program organised for The Streets of Portlaoise 2024.
This initiative, designed to transform complete beginners into confident runners, set the stage for an extraordinary challenge: participating in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon (10km) on the June Bank Holiday weekend in Dublin.
With their eyes on both the finish line and a worthy cause, these determined women dedicated their efforts to raising funds for the Cuisle Centre.
Their hard work and perseverance paid off spectacularly, as they completed the marathon with smiles on their faces and €5200 raised through generous donations from friends, family, and fellow community members.
This group started as a way to bring people together through running, but it has grown into so much more,” founder, JJ Tynan said.
“The support and encouragement each member offers, is what make us special.”
“A heartfelt congratulations goes out to all the participants and supporters of the Couch to 5km program and the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon.
“Your dedication and hard work have not only brought personal triumphs but have also made a significant difference for the Cuisle Centre, an organisation close to many hearts in our community.”
Cuisle Centre Chairperson Mr Niall Kavanagh joined GR8HRUN members for a cheque presentation on Saturday, July 6.
“The work of Cuisle cannot be carried out without the hardwork and generosity of local groups and their supporters, we are extremely grateful for this donation,” Mr Kavanagh said.
GR8HRUN is more than just a social running group; it’s a family. It’s ethos is firmly rooted in being social and non-competitive, ensuring that everyone feels welcome, regardless of their fitness level or running experience.
The group meets regularly on the Heath, where the focus is always on enjoying the run and each other’s company rather than clocking in personal bests.
New members are always welcome to join GR8HRUN. Whether you’re looking to get fit, meet new people, or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Heath and Laois, this group offers a supportive and fun environment to help you reach your goals.
In a world where the hustle and bustle often take precedence, GR8HRUN stands out as a refreshing reminder of the power of community, kindness, and collective effort.
Congratulations once again to the incredible women who conquered the Couch to 5km challenge and the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, and here’s to many more miles of shared success and joy with GR8HRUN.
After a busy six months, almost 15 members have now set their sights on The Bord Na Mona Tullamore Half Marathon. The training and excitement is building for what lies ahead.
The group would like to thank the Heath GAA and it’s Health and wellbeing committee for supporting our initiative. And for allowing us use of the running track as a base for starting off our runners.
