Laois football captain the guest of honour as Mayo National School open their new playground

A new playground has recently been opened in Mayo National School in Crettyard.

Other work was also completed as outdoor classrooms were given a facelift, the astroturf pitch was fenced and a wildflower garden was sown.

All the hard work by parents, teachers and staff was celebrated on the opening of the playground.

Past pupil and Laois Senior football captain Evan O’Caroll was welcomed back to the school.

In a speech, he reminisced about his days in Mayo National School and mentioned how proud he was to return.

Evan was put further into the spotlight with a question-and-answer session from the senior classes.

He answered them all very honestly and it was very evident as to why the pupils have such admiration for him.

Evan was also joined by Councillor Paschal McEvoy, in his speech he acknowledged the facilities in Mayo and remarked how it felt like a little private school in the south-east corner of Laois.

The hard work of a few people in particular were acknowledged, school secretary Nicola Rowan who made hundreds of calls and emails to bring the project together.

Liam Lalor who will be taking over as principal in September was thanked for coordinating the project as it goes to Ann Marie Maher of Laois County Council for the tireless work and endless support she gave during the project.

Finally Evan cut the ribbon to open in the playground to the massive cheers of the pupils.

Everyone then adjourned to the school’s Multipurpose Room for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
