Box by box: How the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District voted in this year’s Local Election

There’s no place like home – and a strong performance in your home area was once again key to sending successful candidates to Laois County Council in this year’s Local Elections.

According to the Fine Gael tallies seen by LaoisToday, Paschal McEvoy (Fianna Fáil) once again exceeded 50% of the vote in Stradbally en route to a poll-topping performance.

An improved showing from Vivienne Phelan (Fine Gael) in Stradbally as well as the addition of Patsy Fennell (Independent Ireland) from nearby Timahoe saw McEvoy’s vote in Stradbally fall slightly from what it was 2019 – but he still got almost 52% of the first preference votes cast in the three boxes in the Little Town.

Phelan saw her Stradbally vote increase from 144 to 190 in her home town in this election compared to 2019, a jump that was absolutely vital in her winning the sixth and final seat.

Her running mate PJ Kelly got almost 56% in the Rath box close to his homeplace in Belgrove while he got 57% up the road in the Killenard 2 box.

Ben Brennan (Independent) broke 50% in both Newtown and Killeshin while the biggest vote for any candidate in a particular station was the 66% gained by Aisling Moran in Killeen where she got 203 out of 308 votes cast – up from the 138 votes she got in her first election in 2019.

While Aidan Mullins (Sinn Féin) got almost 64% in one of the Portarlington boxes, overall his vote was down from 58% in his home town in 2019 to 48% on this occasion on the boxes tallied.

It must be noted that only eight of the nine Portarlington boxes had a tally result.

Sinn Féin’s vote overall in the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District showed an increase from five years ago where Aaron Kelly’s strong showing was a considerable factor despite him not winning a seat.

He got over 400 votes in his native Graiguecullen for a 31.85% share of the vote and while turnout there was up 17% on five years ago, helped by having a candidate from the area, Kelly probably needed to be getting at least half of that to win a seat.
