The rollout of bodycams in Ireland is expected to be extended to Laois if the current pilot phase is succesful.
Local TD Charlie Flanagan has welcomed the rollout of these body cams as he believe it enhances the safety of gardaí and civillians alike.
These cameras are currently being rolled out in Dublin, Waterford and Limerick and are expected to be introduced across the country if effective.
The initiative follows key legislation that passed last November to provide the Garda force with recording equipment.
These cameras will record footage on their own internal hard drive before the camera is docked in the Garda station and the footage uploaded.
The uploaded footage is kept in a database where it can be used as evidence in court or deleted after an agreed time period if immaterial.
Deputy Flanagan said: “Over 2,000 Gardaí have been assaulted while on duty over the past seven years. Gardaí out in the field each day are recorded by perpetrators and bystanders alike”.
“When this footage is manipulated and false narratives are spun, our Gardaí are left with little defence”
It is hoped that the introduction of these cameras will improve safety of Gardaí and civilians alike as is echoed by Charlie Flanagan.
Flanagan said: “It is expected that their introduction here will improve Garda safety, reduce challenges around arrests, reduce complaints of Garda misconduct and save time for court preparation and appearances, as well as lowering the costs of investigations and court appearances”.
