The big day is finally here. Sorting of the votes in the Laois Local Elections gets underway in Portlaoise this morning.
With voting having taken place across the country yesterday, June 7, sorting of votes begins from 9am today.
In Laois, the European and Local Election votes are being separated in the sports hall in Scoil Chríost Rí in Portlaoise where candidates and their supporters will gather to oversee the tallies.
This will give a strong indication of who will be elected – though it is not an official count.
There are three Municipal Districts in Laois – Graiguecullen-Portarlington, Portlaoise and Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick – with 19 seats in total up for grabs.
Final tallies are expected in the afternoon, at which stage the European votes will be transported to the Midlands North West count centre in Westport.
The Local Election votes in Laois will be moved to the count centre in the old Ging’s premises in Kealew Business Park.
It is expected that the official counting process will get underway at about 6pm.
And it is unlikely there will be a result of first count in any of the districts until some point on Sunday.
The LaoisToday team will keep you up to date throughout the day with tallies, reaction and analysis.
