1 – Weekend Read: Portlaoise ideal location for Regional Sports Centre according to newly released report
The issue returned to prominence after series of stories concerning the County Council’s management of St Mary’s Hall – home of Portlaoise Panthers Basketball Club.
Cllrs have spent years probing for more to be done to make progress on the issue, including factors such as site identification, design, potential funding, and projected costs.
In April of 2019, consultancy company, S3 Solutions were commissioned by the Council to undertake a needs analysis report for the development of the complex.
2 – WATCH: Laois trainer has incredible 100/1 winner at The Curragh with Laois-owned horse
There was huge excitement in The Curragh as a horse with double Laois connections won at odds of 100/1.
Red Letter Bray, making his first appearance of the season, stunned everyone by winning the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Habitat Handicap.
The horse is trained by Mountrath’s Liam Cusack and owned by Cathal Brophy.
3 – Dick Miller Interview: GAA, the Council and Timahoe – a lifetime of local service
The Local Elections come around just every five years so in a local media outlet, generating feature ideas and planning the coverage is a major consideration.
As part of that coverage, we decided to seek out some former county councillors from across the political spectrum to tell their stories.
And one of the first names that comes up is that of Dick Miller from Timahoe, a man who served as chairman of Laois GAA during its most successful era and was a Fianna Fáil councillor at the same time.
4 – Death occurs of Tom Brown, former Garda who played football for Laois and Meath
The death has occurred of Tom Brown, a man who played football for Laois and Meath and won senior championships with both O’Dempsey’s and Emo.
A native of Enfield in Meath, Tom moved to Laois in the early 1960s where he was initially stationed as a Garda in Ballybrittas. He joined O’Dempsey’s and captained them to their first Laois senior football championshsip success in 1963, a season where he also lined out for Laois in their Leinster final loss to Dublin.

A Portarlington woman who is afraid of heights is adopting the mantra ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ as she prepares to join 12 of her colleagues at St Anne’s Special School, Newbridge, to raise funds for the school by taking part in a sponsored parachute jump at Clonbullogue Airfield on Sunday, June 23.
Danielle Lawlor, 47, originally from Bracklone Street and now living in Derrymore, has resided in Portarlington all her life.

9 – CCFL Division 3 Cup: Two goals each from Cahillane and Rogers guide Portlaoise to cup glory
The CCFL season has come to a close in Conor Davis Park, Mountmellick, this afternoon, with Portlaoise taking home the Division 3 Cup at the expense of Killeigh.
Two goals apiece from Paul Cahillane and Darren Rogers, as well as an excellent defensive performance in the second half culminated in the trophy going home with Portlaoise.

A Laois referee was the man in the middle at an All-Ireland final in Croke Park last weekend.
The All-Ireland U-20 ‘B’ Hurling Championship final was contested by Down and Roscommon.
