The Laois footballers will play New York in the preliminary quarter-final of the Tailteann Cup next weekend.
Despite Saturday’s narrow loss to Fermanagh, Laois finished in second place in their group and thus will have home advantage next weekend. The exact fixture details have yet to be confirmed.
New York were beaten by Mayo in the Connacht championship and enter the Tailteann Cup at this stage of the competition.
It will be a first championship game between Laois and New York though Laois did famously go on a tour to the US – in both the 1930s and again in 1981.
Should Laois win, they will be away in the quarter-final the following weekend to one of the group winners – Sligo, Kildare or Down.
Next weekend will be a busy one for Laois GAA with the hurlers also in action in the Joe McDonagh Cup final against Offaly in Croke Park.
The full draw is: Laois v New York; Leitrim v Wicklow; Antrim v London; Limerick v Tipperary.
