Portlaoise College welcome employment insight programme

Second year students from Portlaoise College have completed their Work at World programme in conjunction with Business in Community Ireland and Laois County Council.

The Work at World programme which is funded by TUSLA provides second-year post primary students an opportunity to meet employees from Laois in order to better understand the world of work.

It facilitates insight into a variety of roles and encourages young minds to look towards the future.

Students of Portlaoise College met Laois County and Council who gave the kids an insight into the protocols of their jobs, their pathway to them and opportunities for job progression.

One of the sessions was with Suzanne Dempsey Climate Actions Coordinator and A/Energy Officer focused on Portlaoise Low Carbon town which gave students an understanding into what Laois County Council are doing in Portlaoise to counteract climate change.

The school also visited Portlaoise Fire Station to meet where they experienced a tour of the building and were given a brief on the equipment used.

Finally the students were asked to present what they learned during the programme in front of their fellow students.

One of the students said “It helped me see that people enjoy work when you work with people and in a place you like”

The county council staff equally enjoyed the experience they said: “”Students of Portlaoise College were really interested to hear about careers within Laois County Council.

It really opened up a conversation and their mind to a great career in local government and work life balance. The Work of Work really got them thinking about their own future careers.”
