The annual Awards Day and Parent’s Day mass in Knockbeg College was held last week to acknowledge the achievements of the school in the last year.
The mass was celebrated with guests of the community Mons. Byrne, Bishop Nulty and Fr. Dunphy.
Numerous awards were presented to students on the day for both academic and sporting achievements.
The Achievement Award is presented to the top performing student in each year group winners included: Dara Tunstead (1st year), Colin Mitchell (2nd year), Shane Maher (3rd year), Ross O’Gorman (5th year), and Cathal Hennessy (6th year).
There was also an award presented to the most improved student of the year named the Merit Award. This was won by James Doyle (1st year), Ronan Maher (2nd year), Jack Dowling (3rd year), Luke Kehoe (5th year) and Lee Brennan (6th year).
Josh Brady and Daniel Picovici attained awards for art and music respectively while James Hovenden came away with the Comhaltas award for the dedication and promotion of Irish music.
Lee Brennan has given a huge amount of time and effort to ensuring that Knockbeg grows and continues it’s sustainability efforts and education.
He had the privilege of interviewing Mary Robinson outside of school and he wrote an article for the school annual this year.
His commitment to the environment is unwavering and the school acknowledged him by presenting him with a token of appreciation.
On the sporting side of the school the school had an immensely successful year, insofar that their second year footballers achieved a south Leinster title.
Students Cian Cashman and Josh Brady were also selected for the SETU Carlow schools All Star team.
The winners of the Basketballer of the Year Awards were: Alex Broderick (1st year), Tadhg O’Gorman (2nd year), Mikey Byrne (Junior), Jack Kehoe (Senior and Overall).
Overall sportsperson of the year was won by John Phiri, acknowledging his commitment to the school in football, hurling and basketball over the six years he has been in the school.
Along with the achievements of the students the school body can boast €18,400 raised for various charities such as SVP, Pieta House, Embrace Farm and Breast Cancer Research Institute.
Also acknowledged on the day was principal Mr. Carew who is retiring this summer after ten years of service to Knockbeg College.
