1 – Laois player scoops half a million euro in EuroMillions Plus Top Prize win

A player in Laois has woken up half a millon euro richer this morning after they scooped the EuroMillions Plus Top Prize of €500,000 in (Tuesday, May 14) draw.

The player purchased their winning Quick Pick ticket the day before the draw (Monday, May 13) at Daybreak on Main Street, Borris-in-Ossory.

The winning numbers in the Tuesday 14th May EuroMillions Plus draw were: 10, 14, 22, 44 ,47.

2 – Man arrested and due before court following alleged attempted abduction in Laois

A man was arrested and brought before court this week following an alleged attempted abduction in Laois.

On April 26, a woman reported that she had been the victim of an attempted kidnapping at a location between Portlaoise and Mountmellick.

She reported that she was out for a run on a local road in the Eyne area that takes in Killeen, Eyne and Derrydavy.

3 – In Pictures: Laois election hopefuls have heads cut out from posters in overnight attack

Another instance of campaign posters being damaged has been captured, this time on the road between Castletown and The Pike of Rushall.

Posters belonging to European election candidate Peadar Tóibín and local election candidates Cllr Ollie Clooney and Helen Campion have been targeted.

The faces of Tóibín (Aontu), Campion (Sinn Féin) and Ollie Clooney (Independent) have been cut out of their election canvases.

4 – 90 members of an Garda Síochana are currently suspended on full pay

It was revealed that there are 90 gardaí currently suspended and receiving full pay by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee after a question was raised by Independent TD for Laois/Offaly Carol Nolan.

73 of these have been suspended for more than one year, 10 for over 6 months and the final 7 for less than half a year.

This came to light after Nolan asked Minister McEntee to provide data on the number of employees in her department currently suspended on full pay pending disciplinary investigations.

5 – Laois golf course described as ‘an invaluable asset for the area’ amid calls for on-site drainage works

Calls have been made for improvement works to be carried out at a popular Laois golf course described as “an invaluable asset for the area.”

Fine Gael Cllr John King made the comment during the recent Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District meeting this week.

Cllr King called on the County Council to carry out drainage works on the Golf Links road in Rathdowney “to prevent water going on to the golf course and damaging the greens.”

6 – New Independent candidate for Local Elections focussed on farming and rural communities

A new candidate has thrown their name in the hat to contest the upcoming Local Elections, scheduled for June 7.

Kevin Drennan, from the Coolrain/Camross area, will be running as an Independent candidate in the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.

Mr Drennan spent six years working with Sinn Fein in the South-Laois area, but says he left the party in 2021 because they no longer aligned with his views on rural politics.

7 – Two Sinn Féin candidates have their election posters stolen and vandalised

A number of campaign posters belonging to two Sinn Fein candidates in the Portlaoise area have been stolen and vandalised.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley and her party colleague Maria McCormack have reported the incidents this week.

Laois County Council have opened application for seven homes through the Affordable Purchase scheme in Portlaoise.

They will welcome applicants for the seven beautiful ‘A’ rated homes in An Lóchan, Portlaoise.

They are situated right in the heart of the town, close to all local amenities.

Laois have a Leinster final to look forward to after an outstanding performance.

Pat Collier and Robert Jones’ side produced an amazing comeback in the second half to beat Dublin in a sun-drenched O’Moore Park.

Trailing by five points at half time, Laois outscored the Dubs 11 points to three in the second half to book their place in the provincial decider.

10 – Tailteann Cup: Amond double sees Carlow claim draw against lackluster Laois

Laois have made a disappointing start to the Tailteann Cup after they were held to a draw by Carlow in Round 1.

Laois were six points clear as the game entered injury time but managed to concede two goals to allow the visitors leave with a point.
