Raw sewage is coming up through manholes and onto residential properties according to a local County Councillor.
Independent Cllr Ben Brennan made the claim at the May meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District earlier this week.
Cllr Brennan called on Laois County Council to upgrade the sewage line in Killeshin “as raw sewage is coming out on the front lawns.”
He said the situation is a health hazard and has placed blame squarely at the door of the Council.
“That’s Council property that the sewage is on, so Laois County Council has to take responsibility for it, unless I can see it in writing that they’re not responsible for it,” he said.
Mr Adrian Barrett, Senior Engineer said Council staff will meet Cllr Brennan on site “to inspect the issues.”
Cllr Brennan then asked that two speed ramps be installed in the Brotherton Housing Estate in Graiguecullen “as the estate is not safe due to speeding vehicles.”
He said residents are afraid for their children with drivers using “high speed” in the estate.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Padraig Fleming supported the motion, bemoaning rising speeds in housings estates across Laois and indeed Ireland.
In response, Mr Philip McVeigh, Senior Executive Engineer said Council staff will meet Cllr Brennan on site to “assess the works required.”
Cllr Brennan concluded his motions by calling for repairs on the R431 road in Tolerton, saying water is flowing into residential properties.
Mr McVeigh said the Council “will assess the work required at this location and arrange for remedial works to be carried out.”
