To end the 1st year rugby season this year all the schools in Laois entered the “Laois 1st Year Rugby Blitz”.
This took place in Togher, home of Portlaoise RFC, on a brilliant day for rugby on Thursday, May 9.
Mountrath’s first hurdle was against St Mary’s CBS with many lads from both schools teammates from the local club Portlaoise RFC.
The first half was tight between the two teams with each side scoring two tries, but a failed conversion from the CBS let Mountrath take the lead 12-10 at halftime.
Mountrath got the better of their rivals in the second half scoring three more times to run out 31-17, Daragh Mortimer with a hattrick with Matthew Lynch and Tadgh Lowry chipping in with a try each to earn victory in their first match.
Mountrath’s second match was versus well known opponents Mountmellick CS who they bet in the Harry Nicholls Cup, Like the CBS match Mountrath ran in two tries from Daragh Mortimer and Darragh Hooban to lead at halftime again this time 14-7 .
A fight back from Mountmellick was put to the sword with two more tries with Darragh Hooban scoring his second and Dayne Byrne finishing the match off with a Mountrath win with a score line of 24-14.
In their third and final match against Heywood, Mountrath were on the wrong end of the score line at half time this time as they trailed Heywood 12-7 at halftime, an unfamiliar sight for the team
It remained tight throughout the second half but Heywood still held the lead at 17-14 going into the dying seconds of an intense match
Mountrath edged closer and closer to the Heywood try line before Daragh Hooban again broke the line and crashed the whitewash giving Mountrath the lead for the first time in the match and the victory giving them the perfect record in the competition.
