Laois County Council have been urged to remember the importance of roadside drainage systems and the important part such drains play with regard to flooding in the County.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Seamus McDonald said more drainage systems are needed throughout Laois, highlighting problems around the north-west of the County.
Cllr McDonald raised the matter at the May meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District this week.
He first called upon the County Council to resolve flooding problems at Chapel Hill, Rosenallis
Mr Adrian Barrett, Senior Council Engineer said District staff will meet with the Cllr on site to “inspect this matter and identify a solution.”
Next, Cllr McDonald asked the Council to carry out works to resolve the flooding problem at Garrymore, Geashill.
Again, Mr Barrett said District staff will meet with Cllr McDonald on site “to inspect this matter and identify a solution.”
Finally, Cllr McDonald asked the Council to make safe the roadside drain at Skerry, Rosenallis.
“This is a seriously dangerous open drain, and cars are ending up in it,” he said.
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at the Roads Department confirmed that Road Maintenance Crews will attend to this drain “in the coming weeks.”
