The importance of drains, road-side drainage and drainage maintenance was highlighted this week in Laois County Council.
Fine Gael Cllr Conor Bergin made the passionate statement at the May meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District.
It was the final meeting of the Municipal District before the upcoming Local Elections set for June 7.
Cllr Bergin called for the Council to clear drains in Garran, Ballybrophy as well as the Pike of Rushall.
Cllr Bergin said the drain at Garran is “full of rubbish,” which is “causing flooding on the road.”
Speaking about the drain referenced in the Pike of Rushall, the Fine Gael Cllr said the drain was first put in “in the 1960’s” and still plays a vital role.
Cllr Bergin said that particular drain helps to take the water of a very sharp corner on the road, which is “deadly” when wet.
He said these drainage works would be a great help to both residents and businesses in the affected areas.
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at the Council’s Roads Department said Council Road Maintenance crews will attend to these drainage problems “in the coming weeks.”
Cllr Bergin went on to call for the Council to “address the traffic and speeding issues on the L-1612 at Knockaroo and Grange, Borris-In-Ossory.”
Mr Dowling said Municipal District Engineers will meet Cllr Bergin on site to discuss the traffic and speeding issues.
