Laois County Council have set out a path to deliver 631 social houses across the next two years in all areas of the County.
Laois set new records over the last two years, delivering 286 homes in 2023 and 229 in 2022.
The figure of 631 over the next couple of years would continue the Council’s impressive trajectory.
This includes six houses already delivered in Clonroosk Abbey, Portlaoise, with the Council have projecting 145 more homes to be completed by the end of 2024, including:
- 46 in Portlaoise,
- 34 in Mountrath,
- 26 in Borris-in-Ossory,
- 13 in Rathdowney,
- 12 in Portarlington,
- 11 in Stradbally,
- One each in Killeen and Ballylinan.
The majority of these homes are two- and three-bedroom houses.
Elsewhere, projects to deliver 217 social homes in 2025 are currently under construction across the following locations:
- 122 in Portlaoise,
- 49 in Mountmellick,
- 45 in Stradbally,
- One in Killeshin.
Many of these projects have been designated as one-bedroom homes, an area that the County Council has been urged to address in recent times.
With developers unwilling to build many one-bedroom properties, Cllrs urged the County Council to take on that responsibility themselves.
As such, 63 of 217 homes expected to be completed in 2025 will meet the much maligned one-bedroom need, representing 29% of the overall properties.
These one-bedroom homes will include houses, apartments, and maisonettes.
Meanwhile, projects to deliver a further 263 social homes are currently at the planning, design or tender stage.
The majority of these houses, 161 (61%), will be located in Portlaoise, while the others include:
- 31 in Mountmellick,
- 24 in Durrow,
- 18 in Mountrath,
- 13 in Portarlington,
- 12 in Doonane,
- Three in Ballinakill,
- One in Ballyadams.
