It was all smiles in Holy Family Senior School yesterday as they raised their first ever European Flag.
Every year, on May 9, Europeans celebrate Europe Day – a celebration of peace and unity on the continent that dates back to 1964.
Yesterday, students from Sixth, Fourth and Third Class came together in the hall to showcase all that Europe has to offer.
Mr Sean Finlay is the head of the Blue Star Programme in the school which aims to teach the children about European cultures and the European Union through creative projects and activities.
He said: “The children learned all about history, geography and culture from around Europe.
“They absolutely love it and there was great excitement here when they raised the European flag for the first time.”
Some special guests were also present with Cllrs Thomasina Connell, Caroline Dwane-Stanley, John Joe Fennelly and and Catherine Fitzgerald plus TD Sean Fleming were present.
Holy Family Senior School is extremely diverse and contains pupils from around 40 countries with more than 30 different languages spoken.
Students and teachers prepared and presented some beautiful foods from across Europe.
These treats were enjoyed by all after everyone present engaged in a handshake for Europe Day.
