Laois soccer club, Grange United are the newly crowned North Tipperary and District League champions.
33 years after the club was disbanded, the County’s western-most soccer club have marked their resurrection with an astounding league triumph.
A dominant display away from home to second-placed Borrisoleigh saw Grange crowned Division 2 winners with two games to spare.
Two goals from Dean Carey helped the Laois side to an impressive 3-0 win, with an unlucky Borrisoleigh player turning the ball into his own net for Grange United’s third.
The club, based at Killasmeetia Community Centre, represent the area encompassing Borris-in-Ossory, Kicotton and Killadooley.
Their proximity to Tipperary led to them to elect to play in the NTDL, choosing a much more favourable location than the prospect of long trips to Westmeath in the CCFL.
Grange United had been dormant since 1990 but have returned in emphatic manner, seeing off ten other teams to etch their name on the NTDL Division 2 league title.
They were joined in the division by eight teams from Tipperary, including Roscrea side, Killavilla United, as well as Offaly sides, Moneygal and Shinrone.
The Laois side have proved almost unstoppable, and are yet to taste defeat in the league, dropping points only twice all season.
Their incredible run has seen Grange pick up 11 wins and two draws, leaving them on course for a remarkable unbeaten season. Laois’s invincibles?
“To come away with a league title in our short existence can only be credited to the players and the effort they have put in all season and we can’t thank them enough,” the club said.
“We would also like to thank those that travelled to Templetuohy on Sunday, your support is always greatly appreciated.
“Onwards and upwards.”
The club still have a Division 2 Cup semi-final to look forward to, and could add yet more silverware to their already historic season.
