Gardai have made two arrests following the discovery of what they say is a ‘sophisticated illicit pill making facility’ in Laois.
They seized €200,000 worth of cash and a large amount of drugs at a facility believed to have been located in the Rathdowney area.
Gardai raided it and found €140,000 in suspected cannabis, €10,000 in suspected MDMA tablets while a substantial amount of counterfeit prescription tablets were seized.
This raid came from a €2.4 million seizure of cannabis at a location in Meath on Tuesday.
The two arrested are a man, aged in his 50s, and a woman, aged in her 40s.
A spokesperson said: “The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau seized €200,000 cash and a substantial amount of controlled drugs following searches in Co. Laois, yesterday, Wednesday April 24.
“This seizure was made during follow up searches which formed part of the operation on Tuesday in Meath which resulted in the recovery of €2.4 million of cannabis by Revenue Customs Officers.
“During the course of these searches cash in excess of €200,000, €140,000 suspected cannabis, €10,000 suspected MDMA tablets and a substantial amount of counterfeit prescription tablets were seized.
“A sophisticated illicit pill making facility, including a pill press, was also seized.
“All items of evidential value recovered will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further examination.
“A man, aged in his 50s, and a woman, aged in her 40s, have been arrested. Both are detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in Co. Laois.
“The two men (50s) arrested in connection with the €2.4 million cannabis seizure remain in custody at a Garda Station Co. Meath.”
