The Woodenbridge, a tourism attraction in south Laois, has officially reopened

The rebuilding of the iconic Woodenbridge on the River Erkina and the upgrading of its sister bridge on the canal section was officially opened on Sunday.

Both started their journey on in October and concluded with the cutting of the ribbon by Minister Sean Fleming surrounded by local County Councillors and a large gathering of people from near and far on April 14.

The bridge is located at Ballybodin between Durrow and Ballacolla and is a wooden bridge from one side of the River Erkina to the other on the L5638.

Earlier, Michael G Phelan welcomed the large gathering which was followed by a blessing by Fr Martin Delaney who wished all who travel both under and over the bridge a safe journey.

Cllr Oliver Clooney spoke on behalf of the Councillors present who included Seamus McDonald, John King and Conor Bergin.

John Hendy brought along his 1909 model T Ford which is a similar car to that used at the original opening of the Woodenbridge in the early 1930’s

The evening concluded with refreshments for all.

Laois County Council undertook this project led by Edmond Kenny who was able assisted throughout by Dermot Dunne, James Dunne, Paul McLoughlin, James Dowling, Gerry Hooban and Mark Murphy.

He also received assistance from Directors of Services Simon Walton and Donal Brennan along with County Manager John Mulholland.

Cork construction company Comner carried out the work led by bridge building experts Ben Kennedy and Liam Leddy.

Throughout the process, this project had the full support and understanding of the local community.

They are now thrilled to have this iconic tourism attraction which is reputed to be the only bridge made from solid oak timber currently carving public traffic in Ireland.
