Sadness in Mountmellick at death of popular retired Postmistress, Eithne Burns

There is great sadness in Mountmellick following the death of Eithne Burns the town’s retired Postmistress, who served in the role for a long number of years.

There has been an enormous outpouring of sympathy for Ms Burns and her family, with numerous people paying tribute.

Ms Burns, who was 89, is remembered as an astute business woman and for her courtesy and professionalism in serving the community for decades.

Fondly recalled as a “a real lady”, Ms Burns was a huge figure in the town, who ran the Post Office for almost half a century.

Ms Burns took over the position from her father, the original Postmaster in Mountmellick.

The Burns family ran the post office from 1900, when it opened, until 2005, when Ms Burns retired. Eithne took over from her father in 1960.

In 2019, An Post moved the Post Office in Mountmellick from O’Connell Square to SuperValu on Patrick St.

A former resident of the town described Ms Burns as “a real lady, who served the people of Mountmellick with great respect over her long years of service.”

Ms Burns died on Saturday, April 20, at Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise.

She was a much loved aunt and sister of the late Joan, Iris, Florence, Hilda, Sam and  Ann.

Ms Burns will be greatly missed by all her Nieces, Nephews, Friends, Neighbours, and all at Oakdale Nursing Home who cared for her so well in recent years.
