A group of young people from Laois have been honoured at the 2024 Laois/Offaly Garda Divisional Youth Awards, held in the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise.
Rahman Youth Group received a Group Award, recognising their dedication to engaging with the community and emphasising inclusivity.
A Garda Youth Award recognises the outstanding achievement of young people between the ages of 13 and 21, who have undertaken exceptional work in their local communities or who have shown great determination in their own lives.
The Rahman Youth Group consists of young people from Irish, Pakistani, Syrian, Palestinian, Sudanese, Egyptian and Ukrainian backgrounds.
They were nominated by Laois PPN (Public Participation Network) representative, Ms Sara Geraldine Rasool, who said:
“The group have actively engaged with young and old, different religious backgrounds, and a range of different community groups, which demonstrates the emphasis they place on inclusivity within the community.
“They have actively supported younger learners in the community organizing tutoring sessions, educational workshops and mentorship programs aimed at empowering students through their recognition of the importance of education.”
The Rahman Youth Group have conducted a wide range of activities, including acting as library representatives to promote literacy among children and adults from different cultural backgrounds.
They have also volunteered in nursing homes, and have promoting intergenerational connections by organising recreational activities for older members of the community combating social isolation.
“They have organised the collection and distribution of food, clothing and essential supplies in the wake of earthquakes,” Ms Rasool said.
“The efforts of the Rahman Youth Group have garnered recognition from local authorities.
“They are registered with the Public Participation Network and they help community leaders when possible.”
