ESB dubbed ‘exceptionally slow board’ as Laois Councillors say company is ‘answerable to no one’

The ESB (Electricity Supply Board) have come under fire this week, with Laois County Councillors saying the company is “answerable to no one”.

Independent Cllr Ben Brennan called for the County Council to “make contact with the ESB to clarify what is the delay in the repair of street lighting on the R430 Newtown, Crettyard”.

Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineers for Road Design said “a letter will issue to the ESB in this regard.”

The response drew massive criticism from Cllr Brennan, who said “it’s the same answer every time, it’s always ‘a little will be sent,’ never ‘a letter has been sent,’ and there’s definitely never a reply.

“I asked before for the ESB to come in (to Laois County Council) and explain themselves. No sign of them – they’re answerable to no one.

“This has been going on for three or four months; it’s an absolute disgrace.”

Cllr Brennan was joined by several Cllrs in calling for the company to appear before the County Council, with several Cllrs echoing the sentiment that the ESB “is answerable to no one.”

Sinn Féin Cllr Aidan Mullins then dubbed the ESB, the “Exceptionally Slow Board.”

Next, Cllr Brennan insisted that the Council “cut back the rest of the trees on the N80 Northern Relief Road.”

Mr Dowling replied, saying the Council’s Road Design Department will meet Cllr Brennan on site “to discuss cutting back the remainder of the trees” along the road.

An irate Cllr Brennan said “I can’t understand what’s going on here. It’s a death trap on dark nights.

“Laois County Council has already cut back some of these trees, why did they not do them all? Who made that decision?”

Cllr Brennan ended by calling for the installation of two speed ramps in Meadows Way, Graiguecullen.

Mr Tom Drennan, Area Engineer said the Council arrange for a technical assessment to be carried out with a view to ramp installation.
