Independent Ireland, one of the country’s newest political parties, has announced that they will have a second candidate in Laois for the 2024 Local Elections.
Ballinakill woman Colette Byrne has declared that she will run for the newly formed Independent Ireland party.
Under the slogan of ‘working for positive change for the people of Portlaoise’, Byrne will be hoping to win one of the seven available seats in the Portlaoise area.
She joins Timahoe man Patsy Fennell as the party’s second Local Election candidate in Laois.
Independent Ireland say that ‘with a long record of community activism, online bereavement support, and local governance, Colette brings a unique blend of compassion and determination to the forefront of her campaign’.
Born and raised in Laois, Collette’s roots run deep in the local community.
Following the loss of her husband, she founded Widow.ie, an online platform offering support to those navigating the grieving process.
Her efforts earned her widespread recognition, including a prestigious ‘People of the Year Award’ in 2018.
Byrne said: “I am honoured to stand as a candidate in the Portlaoise LEA.
“My experiences have shaped my understanding of the needs of our community, and I am committed to being a voice for positive change.”
Colette says she advocates for affordable housing, support for local businesses, and the well-being of families and youth in the area.
She also says she is a staunch advocate for accountability and transparency in governance, aligning closely with the values of Independent Ireland.
Reflecting on Byrne’s candidacy, TD Michael Fitzmaurice of Independent Ireland expressed his admiration.
He said: “Colette Byrne’s dedication to her community and her tireless advocacy for those in need make her an exceptional candidate for Independent Ireland.
“When we met, I was struck by Colette’s authenticity and desire to make a positive impact in her community, with Colette by our side, we are confident in our ability to bring about meaningful change.”
