Stradbally 2-13 Spink 3-7
ACFL Division 5 Round 1
A strong first half saw Stradbally get the better of Spink in Bill Delaney Park this evening.
The home side enjoyed a ten point advantage at half time but a spirited second half from Spink saw them come right back into the game.
Spink kicked the first point via Colin Rowan but Stradbally soon took control with the dangerous Fionn McEvoy-Mullaly and Colm Kelly combining for a goal for the former.
McEvoy-Mullally added a point while Kelly kicked three as Stradbally went 1-4 to 0-1 up at the midpoint of the half.
Ben O’Mara responded with a point for Spink and they threatened a goal on three occasions – with Jack Larking pulling off fine saves – before they finally got one from Mark Kehoe.
But Stradbally finished the half strongly to take a commanding lead as Danny Langton and John Clancy joined the point scorers.
And with virtually the final kick, Cathal Buggie robbed the Spink defence of possession and charged through to smash in a goal and leave it 2-9 to 1-2 at half time.
Spink regrouped at half time and came roaring back with points from Micheal Downey, Mark Kehoe and Colin Rowan.
And it got even better at the midpoint of the second half as Micheal Downey scored a spectacular goal before O’Mara slotted his second point and the gap was back to three points.
But Stradbally regained their composure as the experienced Colm Kelly landed two long range frees.
Danny Langton and Barry Fitzpatrick also pointed meaning that a late Spink goal proved to be only a consolation in the end.
