News in Brief: Proposed renovations for rural Laois national school and popular tourist accommodation

Barnashrone National School 

The Board of Management of Barnashrone National School have sought planning permission from Laois County council to redevelop the rural school nestled between Mountmellick and Ballyfin.

The school are seeking to demolish an existing water tower structure and to remove two existing prefabricated classrooms.

In their place, the school want to construct a single-storey extension to the west of the existing school building, and a second single-storey extension to the rear of the building.

The project would also create a new vehicular entrance, a staff carpark with storm attenuation system, and installation of a new wastewater treatment system.

A decision is expected on May 1.


The Forum, Mountmellick

The Forum Mountmellick-Tourist Accommodation Ltd have sought planning permission from Laois County council to make renovations at their premises in the town.

The Forum have proposed the following changes for their three-storey, six-bedroom, basement-dwelling guesthouse (a protected structure):

– The conversion of the connecting, two-storey outbuilding at the rear of the property to a restaurant on two floors;

– A ground floor extended kitchen and an administration office at first floor level all connected to the proposed guesthouse;

– The conversion of the existing, two-storey coach house to a ground-floor accessible guest bedroom and storage

– A first-floor, one-bedroom apartment served by a new, private stairwell.

– Demolition of an existing kitchen entrance porch;

– Conservation and repairs and alterations to the existing buildings;

– Extensions of a ground floor extension to the kitchen;

– A glazed orangery link between guesthouse accommodation;

– A new stairwell for the restaurant;

– Extension to bicycle and car parking.

LOETB Training pitch Rathdowney

Laois Offaly Education and Training Board are seeking planning permission from the County Council for a project in Rathdowney.

The LOETB wish to construct a new all weather playing pitch with associated fencing, netting, and lighting at St Fergal’s College, Church Street in the town.
