A Laois Golf club has welcomed their new captains for the year, with the traditional Captains Drive-In recently taking place.
The event was for captains Charlie Gallagher and Theresa Boyle, new captains at The Heath Golf Club.
The captains, adorned in fancy dress, arrived in their custom Barbie Buggy, much to the amusement of the club members.
After the toasts, the two Captains showed off their golfing skills, followed by members participating in a nine-hole scramble that concluded with lunch and prizegiving.
Charlie Gallagher is a native of north-east Donegal, and was first introduced to the game of golf while caddying at Rosapenna Golf Club on the Old Tom Morris course.
He left Donegal for Dublin in the early seventies to study Agricultural Science in UCD.
While enjoying the social aspect of college, Charlie met his wife Liz, who is also a member of The Heath Golf Club.
Charlie joined the club in the early 1980’s and enjoys the challenge of the inland links course every time he plays.
He played off a handicap of 10 at one point in his career.
Lady Captain, Theresa Boyle is a native of Portlaoise who spent many years working in Dublin.
Before golf, Theresa played basketball and badminton, and participated in mini marathons.
Theresa completed the Get into Golf Programme in the Heath Golf Club in 2015 and then joined as a member.
She has served as Competitions Secretary and has been a member of the Ladies Committee for four years.
As Vice Captain she coordinated the Get into Golf Programme in 2023.
“It’s a great honour and privilege for me to represent the Heath Golf Club as Lady Captain for 2024 and look forward to welcoming new and existing members to our various events in 2024,” Theresa said.
