Laois has received a financial boost this afternoon with news of additional funding for outdoor amenities and the domestic abuse service.
€180,000 has been granted for Laois walking trails and amenities, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
Glenbarrow, River Delour, Carrigmeal Woodland, Killeshin Reservoir and Derryounce Amenity areas will all receive €30,000 each for upgrade works.
€30,000 has also been allocated for the provision of outdoor recreation signage to Laois County Council.
Welcoming the news, Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming says that it reinforces the government’s commitment to funding this area.
He said: “This Government funding will invest in these amenities in Laois right on our doorstep, which will be of benefit for local families and the local community that use them.
“This funding will also upgrade these walking trails to help boost local economies in Laois by attracting more visitors.
“These local amenities are great places to visit and get out and about for a walk and also to clear the mind.
“I encourage everyone to take advantage of these fantastic walking trails in Laois.”
Fine Gael’s Charlie Flanagan said: “I very much welcome this funding allocation.
“The Outdoor Recreation Scheme has been crucial to the development of recreation facilities across Laois in recent years.
“Recreation is hugely important for personal health and welfare and more people than ever are taking these matters seriously in their lifestyle.”
Meanwhile, €82,888 in additional funding has been announced for Laois Domestic Abuse Service.
This additional funding will support Laois Domestic Abuse Service with the necessary supports they need to continue and expand their frontline service.
Deputy Fleming said: “Laois Domestic Abuse Service provide a vital service and carry out very important work for women and children in Laois who need their support and assistance.
“I am pleased to also confirm that progress is underway to provide a Laois domestic abuse refuge in Portlaoise, for the County.
“This is very welcome funding for this service and I want to thank the people involved with Laois Domestic Abuse Service for the invaluable work that they do.”
