Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at Laois County Council has revealed that the Department of Transport is preparing legislation for changes to speed limits across Ireland.
The announcement came in response to Fianna Fáil Cllr John Joe Fennelly, who was speaking at the March meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District this week.
Cllr Fennelly had called on the County Council to “extend the 50 kph speed limit on the Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix to include all houses up to the island lane junction.”
In response, Mr Dowling said “the Department of Transport advise that there is legislation due for changes to default speed limits.
“The Department are to publish a National Speed Limit Review guidance document.
“Pending publication of these documents, it is premature to commence a speed limit review, noting that individual speed limit zones cannot be revised in isolation.
Cllr Fennelly had earlier called on Laois County Council to install anti-slip road surface at the exit from Fairway’s Housing Estate in Abbeyleix.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said he would meet Cllr Fennelly on site to examine the entrance and exit at the estate “with a view to carrying out works as appropriate.”
Cllr Fennelly concluded his motions by calling for drainage works to be carried out on Lower Road, Ballinakill in front of three dwellings.
Again, Mr Wilkinson said he would meet the Cllr on site to examine the issues.”
