An estate built 50 years ago is in urgent need of modern parking facilities Laois County Council has heard.
The problem arose a the the March meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District through a motion from Fine Gael Cllr John King.
Cllr King called on the Council to provide extra parking spaces in Quigley Park, Rathdowney “due to the extra volume of cars now being parked there which is causing serious congestion in the estate.”
Cllr King said the estate was built 50 years ago, when car-parking was a less essential amenity as there was less than one car per home.
However, due to modern life, Cllr King says there are now more than 100 cars in the estate, with nowhere to park.
The Fine Gael Cllr suggested that the estate’s green could be re-purposed for parking.
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer said Council staff will meet with Cllr King at the estate to discuss parking proposals.
The Municipal District’s Cathaoirleach then called on the Council to urgently proviside a new footpath from St Kieran’s Park, Errill to the village.
“There are an additional 14 houses completed in this estate,” Cllr King said.
“We need safety measures now, before the Minister comes to officially open the estate.”
Cllr King also called for the upgrade of road markings close to the GAA grounds in Clough village and the removal of part of a ditch to allow for better access through the road.
Mr Dowling said Council staff will meet with Cllr King at both locations to discuss the matters.
