Portlaoise College’s TY show ‘Back to the 80’s’ lights up the Dunamaise Arts Centre

Portlaoise College’s recent Transition Year show “Back to the 80’s” took audiences on a nostalgic journey through time at the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

From the moment the curtains rose, with the dazzling set design and spinning rubik’s cube, the stage was set for an evening of toe-tapping tunes, vibrant costumes, and unforgettable performances.

Under the expert guidance of musical directors Mr. Harvey, Ms. Spencer, and Ms. Wilson, the students delivered two days and nights of show-stopping performances that captured the essence of the 1980s.

With Music Generation providing expertly curated music, every note resonated with the energy and excitement of the era.

The talented cast, led by Oisin Grundy as the narrator (Corey Snr), brought a high school tale of unrequited love and nostalgia to life.

Barry Ramsbottom charmed audiences with his comedic timing and left the audiences sighing with his gentlemanly performance of Corey Jr, while his nemesis, the ever-cool Michael Feldman was expertly played by Jamie Sullivan.

Kirk, played by CJ Daly and Alf by Sam Walsh were excellent wingmen to the uncool Corey, while suave Michael Feldman was made the king of cool by keeping the company of Billy, Lionel and Huey played by Oran O’Brien, Peter Ciarkowski and Mark Whelan, the latter who’s Michael Jackson moves wowed the audience.

The female leads, including Nieve Leith, Abbie Maher, Molly Piekarska, and Ciara McComish Day, dazzled with their powerhouse vocals and dynamic performances.

Each brought their own flair, embodying the spirit of the ’80s with style and grace, with Nieve Leith’s vocal performance catching the eye (and ear).

The audience sang along to their renditions of 80s classics such as Walking on Sunshine and Material Girl.

Completing the female cast were Abbie Harkin and Jessica Witek, who lit up the stage as Mel and Kim, adding sparkle and sass to the production.

A mention must be made of the Damien Moore and Orlagh Creery who portrayed the on-off teacher couple Mr. Crocker and Ms. Brannigan with a perfect blend of humor and drama, while Sorcha Wright Twomey brought depth to her role as Eileen, the new girl in school and the butt of a cruel joke.

Their performances were given weight and were supported by the excellent dance moves and timing of the chorus, who performed dance lifts that this writer certainly wouldn’t try.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to ensure the show’s success.

From the program designers to the transport coordinators and set designers, every detail was meticulously planned and executed.

Principal Noel Daly expressed gratitude to all involved, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the students, staff, and volunteers who made the production possible.

As the final notes faded and the curtain fell, the audience erupted into applause, a testament to the show’s success.
