Laois County Council have met with An Garda Síochána to discuss the “ongoing anti-social behaviour at Glendine” in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer at Laois County Council told the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District that:
“Laois County Council MD Staff have met with An Garda Siochana to discuss measures to be installed to discourage anti social behaviour at Glendine.
“This is an ongoing issue nationally for An Garda Síochána.”
The announcement came in response to a motion from Fianna Fáil Cllr Paddy Bracken, who had asked that the County Council:
“Undertake works at Glendine to alleviate anti-social behaviour and to discourage car enthusiasts from using the area for unofficial car rallying.”
Party colleague, Cllr Seamus McDonald supported the motion, saying there is “scandalous behaviour going on up there.”
Independent Cllr James Kelly also supported the motion, saying there is “intimidation” and “no respect when people are going up there.”
Next, the Fianna Fáil Cllr asked the Council to replace the footpaths on both sides of the entrance to Kirwan Park, Mountmellick.
Cllr Bracken said the footpaths “are in a desperate state,” and services “a huge amount pedestrians, especially children and parents walking to school.”
Mr Dowling Dowling said Council staff will meet with Cllr Bracken on site “to discuss the repairs required.”
Cllr Bracken also called on the County Council to carry out repairs and make safe the dangerous road at Nyra/Camira L-2095.”
The motion was strongly supported by Cllr McDonald.
Mr Dowling said Council maintenance crews will attend to this road “in the coming weeks.”
