1 – 28 transfers approved by Laois GAA ahead of the 2024 club season

Laois GAA have approved 28 transfers internally ahead of the 2024 club season.

Trumera are the big beneficiaries with seven of the transfers coming to them. That goes some way to negating the four that were granted from them and to Shanahoe.

2 – Portlaoise Panthers forced to evacuate St Mary’s Hall on Saturday night and plea for help

“We have spoken to every County Councillor in Portlaoise on numerous occasions over the last couple of years, we’ve spoken to all the TDs – and we were promised the sun, moon and stars, but nobody is doing anything.

“Nothing has changed. The issues that are there were there five years ago.

“We as a club already shipped out €10,000 to get the hall re-lined and varnished.

“We feel that with a club this size, going so well as it it, in a town the size of Portlaoise, there should be an adequate adequate facility where we can play National League and Super League games.

“We’re an indoor sport – this should not be happening.”

There was serious style in the Midlands Park Hotel on Friday evening as Dinner Dance season continued at full pace.

On this occasion, it was the turn of the members of Portarlington RFC to gather.

They came from all over to celebrate the club’s 50th year in existence.

There were great celebrations in the Dooleys Hotel in Birr on Friday night as Camross GAA club came together.

2023 was a magical year for the club’s senior hurling team as they won all around them.

The season began with glory in the Leinster Hurling League and continued into Division 1 of the Laois league.

There was a huge crowd in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Saturday evening as Castletown held a 50 year anniversary celebration.

The dinner dance was well attended with music from the excellent Damien Bowe and The Vows.

Laois GAA chairman PJ Kelly was also present as the club presented medals to two teams.

There was serious style on display as members of The Harps Camogie club gathered for a dinner dance.

The Castle Arms in Durrow was the venue where the celebrations took place.

“What’s not to like about meeting up with your friends in the pub on a Monday night?” queries Roghan Headen about Timahoe’s new men’s choir.

“It’s our men’s shed and the demographic is wide, including young and old. We talk about the events of the day, have a sing song and see where we can go to entertain people. It’s a great bit of buzz and we all enjoy it thoroughly.”

Having left his boyband days behind him, Damien Bowe is hitting a high note with this, his latest project.

8 – In Pictures: Celebratory dinner held following retirement of Laois secondary school principal

A celebratory dinner was hosted by the Board of Management of Heywood CS in The Castle Hotel, Durrow, to mark the retirement of past principal Phil Bowe.

Phil was accompanied by his wife, Mary and the event was attended by members of the Board of management from the past 12 years during the time of Mr Bowe’s principalship.

It also marked the remarkable 40 years service Mr. Bowe has given the school as teacher and principal.

9 – NFL Division 4: Laois weather the Carlow storm to maintain promotion push

The Laois footballers maintained their 100% start to this year’s league campaign and remain on track for promotion to Division 3.

They did so after weathering an early Carlow storm, falling five points behind and not scoring until the 25th minute.

In the end, though, they figured it out, took the lead early in the second half and never looked in any danger from there to the finish.

10 – New fire station on the way to Stradbally as contract signed with contractor

Laois County Council has signed a contract with NODE Architecture for the design and delivery of a new Fire Station in Stradbally.

The contract follows approval of Part VIII proposals, by Laois County Council, for the development of a new Fire Station in Stradbally, located at the N80/R427 Cork/Abbeyleix Road junction.

Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, Cllr Paschal McEvoy, has long advocated for a new fire station.
