Laois County council have revealed a list of improvement measures currently being undertaken in the Knockmay area of Portlaoise.
These measures include a Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) application for the installation of extra car parking spaces in Parnell Crescent.
The announcement came on the back of a motion by Sinn Féin Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley, raised at the February meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District this week.
Cllr Dwane Stanley asked that assistance be provided for the residents of Clonrooske View with a view to making a CIS application similar to that of Parnell Crescent.
The Council went on to inform Cllr Dwane Stanley that a large quantity of rubbish had recently been removed from the field at the back of the estates.
It was confirmed that the area will continue to be monitored by Litter Wardens under the Council’s Environment section as well as the Cluid Hosing Association.
Cllr Dwane Stanley continued to press about the possibility of re-letting five vacant Council properties in the area, commending the residents association for “doing great work.”
The Council confirmed that Cluid have plans to secure the site in quarter two 2024, with four units due for completion in the second quarter of 2024 and another unit due for completion in quarter three.
Cllr Dwane Stanley also called on the County Council to “carry out road safety works to the junction at Ross Lane on the Ballyfin Road and re-surface the sections that are in bad condition.”
The Sinn Féin Cllr described the road as “absolutely lethal,” saying there is “huge speed” on the road, with two junctions and two bends causing “serious road safety issues.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said that the Portlaoise Municipal District Office “will make an application for funding for safety improvement works to be carried out at this junction.”
Cllr Dwane Stanley concluded her list of motions by calling on the Council to remove a tree on Crookedy Road, Portlaoise, that is “causing a hazard due to its location on the road,” and to “remark the junction at Ballytegan.”
There was full endorsement from fellow Cllrs, Catherine Fitzgerald, Thomasina Connell, and Willie Aird, with Cllr Aird raising a similar motion.
Mr Wilkinson said the Portlaoise Municipal District Office “will make arrangements to remove the tree” at Crookedy Road, and that he will “liaise with Cllr Dwane Stanley regarding the line markings at Ballytegan with a view to carrying out works as required.”
