Laois aunt and niece join forces to ‘get the chop’ for three wonderful charities

A Laois aunt and niece have joined forces to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, Irish Wildlife Trust and The Rapunzel Foundation.

Laura Gorman and Amber McNulty from Mountmellick have taken the incredibly brave decision to cut their hair in the name of these three great causes.

The germ of this idea started when Amber, 10 became interested in the Rapunzel Foundation, which was set up to make a difference in the lives of individuals facing hair loss.

The Foundation collect ponytail donations over 14 inches in length to provide wigs to long term hair-loss sufferers living in Ireland.

“The Rapunzel Foundation is such a good cause, and I just wanted to help,” Amber said.

“We’re going to make wigs for people that don’t have hair, and hopefully make some money for them too.”

Amber’s Aunty Laura, 36, says her hair has been her pride and joy ever since she was a little girl.

“Amber initially said she wanted to grow her hair for the Rapunzel Foundation, so I said I’d support her,” Laura said.

“It will be very weird to have short hair, probably for the first time since I was a baby, but it’s all for a good cause.

“Then we decided we would try to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society at the same time.

“Lots of people get affected by cancer every day, either personally or in their families, so it’s a cause everyone can get behind.”

The Irish Cancer Society are a community of patients, survivors, volunteers, supporters, health and social care professionals and researchers.

Their mission is to save lives and improve the lives of people affected by cancer in Ireland.

The decision to add the Irish Wildlife Trust was made to represent Laura and Amber’s shared love of spending time together in nature.

“That was a mutual agreement,” Laura said. “Because Amber and I love going for walks in the mountains.

“We both have a passion and love for wildlife, and nature, and we want to try to help in any way we can.”

The Irish Wildlife Trust is a non-government organisation and charity which aims to conserve wildlife and habitats throughout Ireland.

The Trust encourages a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural world and the need to protect it.

The girls will be getting the chop on Saturday, April 27, at 10am in Bankz Hair and Beauty, Portlaoise – a registered hairdresser with the Rapunzel Foundation.

Laura and Amber have already raised over €1,200 and are hoping to keep that number rising before the big day.
