Laois County Council has agreed to carry out significant works to make a Laois primary schools safer for students and staff.
The case for Ballyadams National School was made at a recent meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District by Fianna Fail’s Padraig Fleming.
Cllr Fleming put down a motion calling on the Council to solve a number of issues at the school.
He said: “I call on Laois County Council to carry out safety measures at Ballyadams National School.
“These are to include the installation of a new railing on part of the footpath from the school to the carpark.
“If there is a railing there, it is safer for everyone as it prevents children from running straight out onto the road.
“The creation of minor passing bays for pedestrians and to upgrade road markings.
“Also, to move back further the flashing school light on the car park side as the current position is too close to the school to be effective.
“These requests come following a meeting with school management and parent representatives.”
It was agreed at the meeting that a representative from the Council would meet Cllr Fleming at Ballyadams NS to assess the situation.
And following that meeting, Cllr Fleming confirmed that works will now proceed.
He said: “I am delighted to confirm that the Council have agreed to carry out all of the safety works as proposed.
“We met with the principal and members of the Parent’s Council who were driving forces behind this project.
“So it will be of great benefit to them and the whole community when the works are complete.”
