Crettyard forward Evan O’Carroll has been named as the Laois senior football captain for the 2024 season.
O’Carroll shared duties with Graiguecullen’s Trevor Collins last year but with the latter now abroad, the attacker will operate alone this year.
This will be O’Carroll’s 12th season with the Laois footballers and he was actually given his debut by his current manager.
O’Carroll has been playing for Laois since Justin McNulty gave him a start as a 17-year-old in an All-Ireland Qualifier away to Wexford in 2013.
Confirming the news on a recent episode of the Talking Sport Podcast, manager McNulty spoke in glowing terms about his captain.
He said: “Evan is our captain for this season and we are very lucky to have such a determined and talented player.
“He is committed to lead Laois to bigger things and I am confident he will be a great captain.
“I know he shared the position before, but this will be his first time as standalone.
“He is a great fella and a great leader – he knows we have high expectations of him.
“I gave him his championship debut and he has a lot of miles on the clock but he is still very hungry.
“We expect him to lead in terms of his performances, preparation and behaviour so he has the potential to be a great leader.”
The Laois senior hurlers have previously confirmed that Aaron Dunphy will captain them for 2024.
The Borris-Kilcotton man will be assisted by Castletown’s Martin Phelan.
