Laois County Council have outlined the plan of action for the proposed Bike Rental Scheme in Portlaoise.
The point was raised by Cllr Barry Walsh, who asked for an update on the scheme at the Portlaoise Municipal District meeting this week.
Mr Simon Walton, Director of Services responded, saying:
“In Autumn 2023, Laois County Council sought expressions of interest for the introduction of an electric bicycle service (E-Bike Scheme) in Portlaoise.
“Following on from that, an agreement in principle, is now in place with an established E-Bike Operator.
“Next steps include a funding package for the construction of the various e-bike stations with a view to the introduction of the service later this year.
“Once all details are clarified, a further update will issue to Elected Members.”
It was a busy meeting for Cllr Barry Walsh, who also requested that the County Council “identify the triangular space in the parking area outside the Square Bar as a non-parking spot.”
The Fine Gael Cllr suggested there should be a review of the general layout of the parking area.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said an inspection will take place at the location to address the motion.
Cllr Walsh concluded by requesting an update from Minister of Education, Norma Foley, on the timeline for the new Kolbe School.
“Regular updates need to be provided in the interim period to completion,” Cllr Walsh said.
