“I think it’s a very basic requirement now, to have Wi-Fi in a hospital.”
That is the view of local Fianna Fáil County Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald, who called on Laois County Council to install public Wi-Fi at Portlaoise Hospital.
Cllr Fitzgerald was speaking at the Portlaoise Municipal District meeting this week, which she chairs.
“Above any place, a hospital is where people would need Wi-Fi,” Cllr Fitzgerald said.
“I know we’ve come a long way in Laois, but I think in this day and age, that’s absolutely crazy.
The Council confirmed that a correspondence will be made with the relevant Department.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald also called on the Council to review the pedestrian crossing between Dunne Stores and Tesco.
“What we’ve ended up with there is a constant stream of people crossing, and it’s causing major delays,” Cllr Fitzgerald said.
In response, Mr James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer said:
“Laois County Council Road Design Staff will visit the crossing, assess the need and feasibility of improvements at this location and thereafter make arrangements as appropriate.”
Lastly, Cllr Fitzgerald called on the Council to fill the pot holes in Rathnamanagh and to include the Rathnamanagh Road in the 2024 Roads Programme.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said the Portlaoise MD Office will carry out those road repairs, and that the Council will examine the road for consideration as part of the 2024 Resurfacing Programme.
