The Laois Schools cross country championships took place in Knockbeg College on a bitterly cold but sunny Wednesday this week.
In all, eight races took place with seven secondary schools represented with athletes.
Tom Dunne, Martin McDonald and Cian McDonald from Laois athletics help set up the course in Knockbeg along with Knockbeg’s caretaker Jonathan Farrell.
Fiac Gaffney of Knockbeg College won the Minor Boys race while Cian O’Sullivan, also of Knockbeg, won the Junior event.
David Wajrak of Portlaoise CBS stopped it from becoming a Knockbeg clean sweep as he won the Intermediate race.
But the hosts were back in business for the Senior Boys race as Mackenzie McIvor, who will be in action for the footballers later today, crossed the line first.
Colaiste Iosagain Portarlington completely dominated the girls races as their athletes won all four.
Mia Gallagher took Minor glory while Eliza McLoughin was the Junior winner.
Kate McLoughin raced to Intermediate success and Della McLoughlin completed the sweep in the Senior.
Successful athletes will now progress to the South-Leinster championships which take place on Monday week.
