It is five years since the news broke that Mountrath mart had closed, a move that was met with shock and dismay.
The decision was a major blow to beef farmers in Laois as the mart has been a central part of farming life for many years.
It was reported at the time that the mart was closing due to rising costs and insurance premiums.
Efforts have been made over the years to reopen the mart, but as yet to no avail.
Now, Mountrath Co-op Livestock Sales Ltd have decided to hold a meeting to once again try to reignite this lost amenity.
Acting Chairman of the Mountrath Co-op, Ken Holmes, spoke with LaoisToday about the ongoing situation.
“I am very happy to announce that the Committee is being proactive in its efforts to reopen mart complex for business,” Mr Holmes said.
“The committee is hosting a public meeting to outline our plans for reopening the sale complex.
“This meeting is open to all shareholders, businesses, interested parties, the general public etc.
“Mountrath mart had a proud tradition of hosting livestock sales, providing a vital service to the agricultural community, as well as providing a social outlet. Adding business to the town.
“Now the opportunity to bring stock to a local mart will be available again.
“Mountrath was a thriving mart drawing people and stock from all over Ireland.
“It is hoped that with the support of the community that a full sales program will be reintroduced on a planned basis starting with a calf sale from March 6 onwards and then possibly sheep sales and then general cattle sales and then weanling sales later in the year.
“We have invited a number of guests to our open meeting, and I encourage each and every person to come to attend; you will be most welcome.
The meeting to reopen the mart will be held in Bloom HQ Mountrath on Thursday, February 1, at 8pm.
